Our story • Mason's Forever 17 Legacy Foundation

His life was far too short. His legacy is still reaching people.

The Caring Shelf was created in loving memory of Mason, a deeply loved son who died at just 17. His compassion for others—especially young people who felt unseen or were struggling—became the heart of a mission built on dignity, practical help, and hope.

Why we began

Love that keeps showing up.

Grief changed our family forever. Mason's Forever 17 Legacy Foundation grew from the determination to honor his memory by standing beside teenagers who are facing some of life's hardest moments.

We believe young people deserve to be heard without judgment, to have someone walk alongside them, and to receive practical help as they work toward a safer, more stable future.

“Resale into Restoration: Dignity, Stability, Hope.”

More than a thrift store.

At The Caring Shelf in River Oaks, donated clothing, household goods, and furniture get a second life. Affordable shopping helps sustain a larger purpose: connecting teens in crisis with encouragement, mentorship, resource navigation, and essential support.

We also help neighbors experiencing immediate hardship whenever resources allow—whether that means clothing for a job interview, essentials for a family starting over, or simply treating someone with the kindness and respect they deserve.

What guides us

Dignity. People are more than their circumstances.

Stability. Small, concrete acts of help can make the next step possible.

Hope. Nobody should have to feel invisible while asking for help.

Melissa Brooks, BSN, RN

Founder & Chief Executive Officer — Mason's Forever 17 Legacy Foundation and The Caring Shelf

When Melissa lost her beloved son Mason at just 17 years old, her world changed forever. Mason was a young man whose life mattered deeply, and his age became part of the promise behind the name Mason’s Forever 17 Legacy Foundation: that his story would not end at seventeen. As his mother, Melissa carries both the heartbreak of losing him and a fierce determination to turn that love into something that reaches other young people when they need someone most. She founded the foundation and The Caring Shelf to help teenagers and families facing crisis find compassion, practical resources, mentorship, and a path forward.

For Melissa, this is more than a thrift store. It's a mother's commitment to carrying her son's legacy forward by helping others feel seen, valued, and supported.
